About us

About Us

Scouting is the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 4 to those who are young at heart, fun, challenging activities and personal development that make a positive impact in local communities.

Scouting provides a platform for young people and adults to reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, expeditions overseas, photography, climbing and zorbing.

As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, computer programming, or even how to fly a plane. There’s something for every young person. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.

About Newmarket District

Newmarket District has over 700 members supported by about 300 adult volunteers.

We have 12 Scout Groups and 3 Explorer & Young Leader Units, all delivering a high-quality programme.

Each group is lead by a Group Lead Volunteer

The original Groups that formed the new District were (as listed)

  • 2nd Newmarket
  • 1st Newmarket
  • 1st Exning
  • Cowlinge
  • Fordham
  • Gazeley
  • Kirtling
  • Swaffham Prior

Total estimated strength 196. The first three Troops were ‘Newmarket’, the last five ‘District’. The distinction, as used elsewhere, was inside the town boundaries and outside.

Get involved

There’s lots of ways you can get more involved with Scouts as a parent, carer or family member.

From helping out occasionally on a family rota or playing a vital role behind the scenes, to stepping up as a leader, our volunteering activities are as varied as you.

We’re talking tidy uppers and tea makers, session planners and fire builders, fundraisers and treasurers, and all-round team players to support our young people.

The good news is you shape what you do and the time you have to give. Scouts happens when a lot of us give a little (and no, you don’t have to be a Scout or outdoors expert to volunteer).
